CENTURYLINK
CenturyLink, now the third largest telecommunications company in the nation, has had a few recent acquisitions and announcements. CenturyLink provides broadband, television, voice and wireless services to consumers and businesses. CenturyLink provides data, voice and managed services to business, government and wholesale customers in local, national and select international markets through their high-quality advanced fiber optic network and multiple data centers. Their customers range from Fortune 500 companies in some of the country's largest cities to families living in rural America.
CenturyLink's closing on the acquisition of Qwest on April 1, 2011 increased the total number of employees in the State of Ohio from 1,200 to 2,100. Their recent acquisitions have brought together many key assets that are complementary to the hosting and cloud computing space. These assets include a nationwide fiber backbone, a proven suite of enterprise products and services, and data centers.
Additionally, CenturyLink announced on February 15, 2011 they are an authorized agent of Verizon Wireless. CenturyLink will offer Verizon Wireless equipment and service plans to residential and small business customers. CenturyLink customers will be able to choose from Verizon Wireless' full lineup of devices, including smartphones, feature phones, and Internet devices such as tablets, netbooks, mobile hotspots, and USB modems. In addition, CenturyLink customers will have access to Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network which is available today in 38 major metropolitan areas and more than 6 airports, and will be expanded to an additional 140 markets by the end of 2011. An announcement will be made when customers will be able to begin purchasing wireless handsets and services.
On Wednesday, April 27th, CenturyLink announced it will acquire Savvis, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and hosted IT solutions for enterprises. Savvis is based in St. Louis, Missouri and has approximately 2,450 employees in North America, Asia and Europe. Following the closing of the transaction, CenturyLink will employ approximately 50,000 people.
Savvis provides an immediate and significant platform for CenturyLink to capture growth in managed hosting, cloud computing, and colocation when combined with the CenturyLink hosting business, national network, and deep penetration across all business customer segments. Savvis' operations will continue to be based in St. Louis after the acquisition is complete, which is expected to occur in the second half of this year.
This acquisition will leverage CenturyLink's robust national broadband network and their existing business customer relationships to fully realize the potential of Savvis' capabilities for customers. Employees will benefit from the opportunities created by greater scale and a wider array of product and service offerings which have the potential to boost revenue growth, making CenturyLink more competitive and successful in the future. This combination also will enhance value for shareholders and create new opportunities for employees.
